UP ITDC Hosts Online Workshop on Data-Driven Decisions in Higher Education Using NVivo

The University of the Philippines Information Technology Development Center (UP ITDC) hosted an online workshop on Data-Driven Decision Making (DDDM) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) using qualitative tools, particularly NVivo, on 4 February 2026 via Zoom.

Designed to move beyond theory, the workshop equipped UP administrators, personnel, and researchers with practical skills in qualitative analysis, enabling them to apply data-driven approaches to institutional decision-making.

The session featured Nicamil K. Sanchez, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of Philippine Consortium, Inc. Dr. Sanchez is widely recognized for his contributions to social work, research, and technology development. His pioneering use of digital tools—including NVivo, Wolfram Mathematica, XLStat, Citavi, Piktochart, OriginLab, and EViews—has advanced research policy, program development, and data analytics. His work continues to position him as a trailblazer in integrating technology into the social sciences and education.

Dr. Sanchez introduced participants to the DDDM Framework and discussed the role of qualitative data in HEIs. He also led a hands-on NVivo “Click-Along” walkthrough, covering:

  • Importing data (Word, PDF, survey results)
  • Visualizations (word clouds, mind maps for reports)

An important component of the workshop was his discussion on social learning in the workplace, emphasizing collaboration and knowledge-sharing as key drivers of institutional growth.

The event drew 257 participants from various UP constituent universities (CUs). The largest contingents came from UP Diliman (126 attendees), UP Los Baños (50), and UP Visayas (24). Attendees included 118 administrative staff, 53 faculty members, and 70 research, extension, and professional staff (REPS), reflecting broad interest across the academic community.

This initiative underscores UP ITDC’s commitment to advancing the University’s digital transformation agenda. In line with the public service mandate of UP, the workshop supports the vision of UP President Angelo A. Jimenez to modernize institutional workflows, foster inclusive engagement, and position the University as a national leader in digital innovation. (Levi Lusterio, ITDC, 4 February 2026)
